Join our team! Substitute teachers, nurses, secretaries, and paraprofessionals are an integral part of Charleston R-I Schools. We need talented individuals to work with our students, and in return we offer flexible hours, a supportive working environment, and competitive wages.
 
The daily rates* for substitutes are as follows:
SUBSTITUTE TEACHER: $125.00 short-term / $197.25 long-term
SUBSTITUTE NURSE: $125.00 short-term / $183.59 long-term
SUBSTITUTE SECRETARY: $100.00 short-term / $117.37 long-term
SUBSTITUTE PARA: $100.00 short-term / $110.24 long-term
*Daily rates as of August 2023.
 
Note: In August 2023, the Board of Education removed the pay distinction between degreed and non-degreed subs.

Requirements

All substitutes are required to have a Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) issued substitute teaching certificate. If you do not already have this certificate, we will help guide you through the process. 
 
A Substitute Certificate requires 36 semester hours of credit from a regionally accredited college or university. Verification of these hours must be provided with an original transcript to DESE from each institution the applicant has attended. 
 
If you do not have 36 semester college hours, a Substitute Certificate may also be granted to an individual who has successfully completed a minimum of twenty (20) clock hours of department-approved substitute teacher training. Training is now available at the links below. Technical assistance for any issues or questions regarding the online training is provided by Frontline;
